Part 2-1: Shock After Shock

"My name is Dullahan, and this little one here is Willow."

Facing the apparently dumbfounded Amy, Ryoshi, and Jukidoor was...a rather congenial Duskull and a depressed-looking Litwick, respectively.

"Well... Okay then..." Ryoshi scratched the back off his head. Were these two to be trusted? After all, they popped out of nowhere, a couple of ghosts right after the three were attacked by ghost-like projections of their own shadows…It seemed a bit too coincidental. "And what might you two supposed to be?"

"I am glad you asked," said the Duskull, whose tone of voice was noticeably very formal. "We are the gatekeepers; guardians of a treasure with power unimaginable!" Dullahan pointed to the key around his neck as if to prove his point literally, though what exactly it was supposed to unlock was unclear. "We come from a time in the Kingdom of Aether when the children of the moon used to live on these hallowed grounds...before the enemy we thought could be trusted wiped them out."

"Children of the moon?" asked Amy. "Huh. That's weird. Goddess Cresselia referred to us like that in the ancient legends, didn't she, Dad?"

"Well, yeah, but I figured it's because we evolve thanks to Moon Stones and all that." Jukidoor shrugged.

Dullahan floated up to them and stared at them intently, which was a little creepy considering he had two eyeholes for one eye. The Jigglypuff couldn't fathom why a Pokémon could even exist with such a design. But then again, spirits could be as scary as they wanted to be, could they?

If only he had a mouth, they would have been able to see him smile. "Ohoho, but you two should know...the children of the moon I am referring to just happen to be you two! Or more specifically, your ancestors. One day, a long time ago, those of the Clefairy and Jigglypuff lines came here from the moon on a meteor that landed in this very kingdom, and created a kingdom that lasted for a thousand years.”

For a while, the three of them just stared, trying to take in everything the Duskull had said.

Until Amy was the first to break the silence. "...Wait...WHAT??"

"W—wait a minute! Is that true?!" Ryoshi seemed just as shocked as Amy. "You mean Amy's old tales about her ancestors are true? They really came from the moon?!"

The Mawile's head was swimming at this point. He hadn't really expected anyone to really be capable of coming from space, but... Amy's ancestor's had? "Heh... Hehe... I guess you really are my little moon princess, huh?" He tried to lighten the mood with a joke, but he could tell Amy was rather caught up in her emotions.

All Amy she could do was hug Ryoshi and stare back at him, smiling. "Well, yeah...I mean, I always believed it was true..." The way she was hugging him, though, seemed to show that she felt more strongly about it than what she could put into words.

"Oh, yeah... Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound so mean, Amy. I just couldn't really believe anybody coming from space." Ryoshi hugged her back.

She nodded. “I know you didn’t.”

Jukidoor then cut in. "But I've never heard ANYTHING about them being here, much less making a kingdom like this one! All our stories say we came from the moon and have always lived as the Hoshizora tribe."

"And there is a very good reason for that, which ties into what I said about the treasure with power unimaginable. A treasure that was so well known that it would only be a matter of time until that catastrophic day came,” said Dullahan.

The Litwick said nothing, and only seemed sadder. So sad, in fact, that she just faded into thin air behind the Duskull, making Amy a bit nervous as to what really happened back then.

Ryoshi was the first to speak. "So, mister... Dullahan? Do you mind telling us about what happened so long ago?"

"Indeed I shall. And besides, I had been searching for someone who could defeat their shadows, and in this way, I shall explain why it was so important."

Amy coughed a bit. "Ahaha, well...that was sort of just me..."

Dullahan winked. "Ah, well, in my book, it is close enough~."

He then floated back and began. "It all started two millennia ago when the meteor that brought your ancestors here came from the moon and landed where the church is now. It indeed had those of the Jigglypuff and Clefairy lines, as well as Cresselia, saying that she was sending her children from the moon to share their knowledge with the people of this world. They indeed befriended those of us who lived here, and soon began to build a kingdom much like the kingdoms of this land. And in fact, only kings could rule in those days, and thus, it was the only the males who could assume the throne."

Jukidoor stopped him there. "Wait wait wait, waaaaait a second. Are you saying that they let GUYS rule back then, and only them?"

"Wouldn't that be really hard to do?" asked Amy. "There aren't that many guys to begin with at all!"

"You two are both correct. It was not uncommon for royal families to be quite large. At any rate, they guarded a treasure of great, great power, known as the Celestial Stone. It was the secret to their success in this land, and what would be disaster for them if fell into the wrong hands. And there were those, of course, who wished to take it for themselves. So one day, 1,000 years ago...they attacked during the coronation ceremony."

His voice then took on a somber tone. "...The atrocities committed against your people were...unspeakable. But against all odds, the young prince managed to protect the Celestial Stone by using its power. Yes...in order to seal the treasure away, he used its power to take away the Fairy-typing from his people, as well as many other species. Many, but not all. And the reason you three are sick is because of this missing type that you all should have had if it were not for the young prince."

If they weren't shocked back in the first revelation, they were now. How many bombshells was this guy going to drop on them? "Fairy-typing...? Wait, we were supposed to be a different TYPE!?" asked Amy.

"Ah, it differs. You, Amy, should be Normal/Fairy, and you, Ryoshi, should be Steel/Fairy. As for you, Jukidoor...you'd just be Fairy instead of normal. Apparently, it really affected the young prince's species the most."

"Wow," uttered Jukidoor, who was taking this quite well. "Was he a Clefable too?"

"Ah, he evolved into one right before he died. As part of the coronation ceremony, since princes were Jigglypuff and Clefairy and kings were always their evolved forms," explained Dullahan.

"Sweet. I could have been a king back then~." Of course only Jukidoor would be able to joke around at a time like this.

"Haha, that explains why Master Kel-Zich wanted us to make the wedding all Fairy-themed and all, right, Ryoshi...?" Though Amy tried to lighten the mood, she looked at him with concerned eyes, hoping he'd take the news well.

Ryoshi stood silent, mouth agape. Had he heard that correctly? There used to be another type long ago, one that Clefable, Jigglypuff, and Mawile all used to have? And out of everything it could have possibly been, it had to be FAIRY? Sure, he could see Clefable and Jigglypuff being fairies; they were all pink and pixie looking, but Mawile?!

"A...Are... ARE YOU SERIOUS?" Ryoshi slapped his forehead. He hadn't meant to explode like that, but... "I'm a warrior! Not some fairy tale creature! Why would Mawile even be a Fairy-type?!"

"Mawile always HAS been half Fairy-type, before that incident," explained Dullahan. "See it as however you like; is one of the irrefutable laws of nature. Besides, thanks to the treasure, the Fairy-type was one of the most powerful types back then."

Dullahan might have been calm and nonchalant, but Amy certainly wasn't. At Ryoshi's outburst, she let go of him like a hot potato and turned away, shivering, as if he had hurt her. She tried to keep her tears in as she look up to the Duskull in hope. "But...but that's just in the past, right? It's not like any of us can regain that type if we don't want to...right?"

"I am afraid if any of you wish to go that route, you shall all die."

Their eyes widened in shock, and only Jukidoor could respond. "...What do you mean, die?"

"The end of my story shall explain it. After the young prince sealed the Celestial Stone away and died, as a result of the enemy not obtaining it, the other kingdoms easily defeated them. However, the assault had permanent effects. It destroyed the kingdom for good, and the remaining survivors fled. In fact, I do believe that a Clefable named Anzic and a Jigglypuff named Bazel were the ones who started your Hoshizora tribe and were so saddened that they swore to never let their descendants know of that horrible night, ever."

Jukidoor nodded. "That makes sense. In our stories, Anzic and Bazel were the ones who came from the moon and started the tribe in the first place. I suppose if they wanted to not remember something that would hurt them, then...they could have easily left the kingdom part out..."

"But what do you mean we're all going to die!?" shouted Amy.

"Because tomorrow night is the 1,000th anniversary of that tragic night. That Celestial Stone’s power can only work for 1,000 years. And unfortunately, if no one helps to give back the energy of your types that were taken so long ago, then after the next night passes, everyone who is inflicted with this disease shall die." He then glared. "THAT is why I have searched for those who could defeat their shadow; because only they can possibly confront the ghost of the young king who has the treasure and defeat him so that everyone who is suffering from this illness SHALL NOT DIE."

And with this, Amy burst into tears. It wasn't fair. This was something she should have been happy to know; how to cure this disease. But to her, it was like a death sentence. She didn't want her beloved Ryoshi to be upset, ever, and this was probably the worst thing to ever happen to him! There was no way out. If they managed to save everyone, Ryoshi would be upset with her, but if they didn't to spare his feelings, everyone, even herself, would die.

Jukidoor could only shake his head sadly and pat Ryoshi on the back. "If it helps, man...it's probably one of the main reasons you guys fell in love with each other. Who knew you ended up sharing a type all along?"

"..." Ryoshi muttered something unintelligible under his breath and growled. As if finding out that he'd been a fairy all along was bad news enough, there was a death sentence to not just him, but Amy and the rest of her tribe if they all didn't become fairies? What kind of trade off was that supposed to be?! And to top everything off with a little stink cherry, now Amy was really upset, either at his outburst or the possibility of dying. Probably both...

He let things marinate in his mind for a while, walking back and forth and muttering things to himself. Finally, the Mawile grit his teeth, took a deep breath in and out, then again before finally plopping down on the floor and making a move to pull Amy by picking her completely off the ground and setting her in his lap before pulling her head into his chest, and she immediately clung to him, desperately trying to help him feel better.

He patted her for a moment before sighing and looking back at Dullahan. "If the choice is between becoming more girly or countless people dying... There's not much of a choice now is there? As much as I hate to say this... Put me in a dress, call me Ryonna, and tell us how the crap to cure everyone."

"It is very simple; however, to top things off, the ritual can only work tomorrow night, when the moon and stars have aligned in the correct pattern. I shall gather everyone who has also defeated their shadows at your king's palace tomorrow evening, where I shall lead everyone to where the ghost of the young king lies. We shall convince him to give us the treasure through any means necessary, and from there, it is only a matter of bringing the stone to the altar at the very top of the mountain which we are inside at this very moment." The Duskull pointed up. "So long as the stone makes it before the night ends, you shall all be saved."

Jukidoor nodded and coughed. "S—sounds fair enough. But I have a question, Mr. Dullahan Man!" As if his disposition suddenly changed, he wildly waved his hand in the air.

"Yes, Jukidoor?"

"What exactly does the Fairy-type bring for us? Like, what are we good against, bad against, you know, that stuff? You said they were the most powerful warriors in the world back then, right?"

"Indeed they were." The Duskull nodded.

He then picked up a stick and started drawing in the ground a type chart to show his point, illuminated by the light of the Chargestone. "You three would become completely immune to Dragon-type attacks as well as become resistant to Dark, Fighting, and Bug-type attacks. If you were to learn any Fairy-type moves, you would then be able to hit all those types for super-effective damage, minus the Bug-types. Though Fairy attacks don't do too well against Fire, Poison, and Steel types, and of those, Poison and Steel-type attacks would be bad for you."

At this, Amy suddenly stopped crying in surprise and turned her head around. "Wait...Dragons won't be able to do anything to us? And we can hurt them really badly? Is that why Dragon-types are trying to attack my tribe and are acting psycho around here lately?"

"That is the case, indeed. I presume it is an involuntary sense of premonition on their behalf of the changes the coming night would bring, if we are successful. But anyway, as I was saying..."

He then floated up to Ryoshi. "...Since YOU would become Steel/Fairy, you're already immune to Poison, and resist Steel. If you consider the amount of resistances you would gain because of this, then to me, it would be illogical for you to NOT want this type change, as your battle performance, if that is so important to you, would improve considerably. Consider this in mind, my dear boy."

"W—Woah, really...?" Ryoshi stared at the ghost with bewildered eyes, but for the first time tonight, he was taken aback with good news. Presented with this new knowledge, the Mawile's mind suddenly began to take the advantages into account.

A new type shouldn't actually affect his physical prowess, should it? He would be as strong physically as ever. He hadn't expected a type called 'Fairy' to be anything spectacular, but from what Dullahan was describing... Adding Fairy to his already Steel typing would bring nothing but advantages type wise. He would still be weak to Fire (Of course, why would fairies resist that?) and Ground, but he would gain a bit of resistance to Fighting, and he already resisted or was immune to Fairy's weaknesses. And becoming immune to one of the strongest types of all, Dragon, was a huge bonus. Not to mention all the types he could become good against because of it...

"Alright, I get your point, Dullahan. The Fairy thing is better for me typing-wise." The Mawile nodded as a small smile cracked once more. "But there is one thing I'm a bit concerned about."

Ryoshi moved Amy from his lap to the ground in front of him and cupped her chin upwards so that he could look into her, albeit slightly red at the moment, emerald green eyes. "Amy? Are you going to be alright with being weak to me? I know it probably doesn't matter to you, but... I just want to make sure you're okay with all of this."

"Oh..." In Amy's frustration at how badly Ryoshi was taking this whole thing, she hadn't quite focused how this new type could affect her personally. Part of her was thrilled at having an awesome type that was actually good against stuff, as opposed to Normal-type, which was good against nothing, so that would give her an advantage as well as her whole tribe, for that matter. Plus, she finally wouldn't have to worry as much about Fighting-types anymore.

On the other hand...there were those two weaknesses. "That's right...you and Ned..." Was it a really good idea to have two weaknesses instead of just one if it meant giving her three advantages (provided she could even learn a Fairy-type attack)? It might be. Though at the same time, she couldn't help but pout at him since his typing would eliminate weakness to Poison...but there was still Fire and Ground, wasn't there? So that evened out.

But beyond logistics, there was one more thing...

She then snuggled into his arms and looked him in the eyes. "...But of course I'm okay with that. I love you, Ryoshi~. I mean, it's not like you know any Steel-type attacks, and even if you did, you wouldn't use them on me, so..." She then turned to Duskull. "And it's not like it would hurt me to hug him like this, would it, Dullahan?"

He looked as if he was almost holding back laughter for a second there. "Of course not~. I have known several couples like you two in my lifetime, after all."

She smiled in relief. "Man. You could have saved me a whole ton of headaches if you just told us this from the start!"

He shrugged. "Considering I just revealed to you three major revelations to you in the course of a single hour, what did you expect? I am still in need of practice explaining everything one needs to know for this important ritual."

"That's good... It would be rather hard if we couldn't even hug..." Ryoshi grinned. "Alright Dullahan, we're with you. Tomorrow, we'll help all we can with the fairy stone."

Jukidoor grinned. "Yeah, we're with you all the WAY, man!"

"I am glad to hear that~. At any rate, I suggest the three of you rest here until morning, as now I shall head to your tribe and any others who have defeated their shadows just now to reveal to them all I have told you tonight."

Amy gave the ghost a concerned look. "That was a lot. You sure your throat would be okay, Dullahan?"

The ghost chuckled. "Since I am, well, as you say, dead, such things are of no concern to me~. But yes, the three of you deserve to save your energy for tomorrow evening. Meet me at the front gate of the castle then, and everyone else who agrees to help shall also be there. And do not worry. If we all work together, we shall save your lives."

And with that, he floated out through the cave entrance, leaving the three soon-to-be-Fairy-types left in the back of it, only illuminated thanks to the Chargestone.

"He's right," said Jukidoor, promptly flopping down on the cave floor. "I'm beat! Goodnight, kids~."

"Yeah, alright..." Ryoshi sighed and rubbed his head. He had slept on rather hard surfaces before, but that didn't make them any more enjoyable to lie on. "Well, might as well try to sleep... G'night, Amy." The Mawile leaned over to the Jigglypuff and gave her a small kiss before lying down with a grunt. "With any luck we won't die tomorrow..."

"Yeah...with luck..."

But what if they did?

No, she thought. Don't think that way. As much as she wanted to go after Dullahan and get the Celestial Stone from that young king now, she also figured that it would be dangerous if the stone was lost too early or something to evil people before the day when it would actually work, and besides, just merely staying up this long to listen to what Dullahan had to say had tired her out far more than she expected it to. Then again, she was sick, so...she supposed it only made sense.

Not to mention all the revelations that he had just told them. Her ancestors really did come from the stars, but they had formed a kingdom on this land long ago, and they were all Fairy or half Fairy-types. And then there was the whole "possibility of dying" thing after tomorrow night if things didn't go well...why did Dullahan have to tell them that? Why them?

She then hugged Ryoshi and buried her face in his chest, not wanting to let him go. What if things didn't go well, and they actually would die two days from now? If that meant that they could never get married...well, even so, she wanted him to be with her even at the end.

Even with his eyes clamped shut, Ryoshi could feel Amy cling to his chest and shiver. It was obvious she was scared about tomorrow and what would come from it whether or not this mission succeeded, and why wouldn't she be? He was a little frightened himself...

Either way, tonight was right now. The Mawile snapped his tunic off, draped it over the two of them and drew her back to his chest and his hold. "Try... to get some sleep Amy, okay? Nothing good will come from not getting enough rest."

"I am," she whispered. "I...I just wanted to..."

"Just wanted to... what?" he whispered back.

Whoops. Looked like she was wrong in assuming that he'd be able to figure it out. She gave him a weak smile. "You know...for us to be together like this while we can. I think I'd be able to get some rest knowing you're right here with me, you know what I mean?"

Ryoshi's smile grew a bit bigger, and he gave his fiancée a squeeze. "Of course... I'll always be here for you. I... love you." With his final words, he leaned over and gave her one last peck on the forehead.

She smiled happily as she finally relaxed. As she drifted off to sleep, she figured that even if things ended up not going well, at least she would know the kindness Ryoshi had always shown her, even until the very end.

This is a prose-with-picture collab for #Pokemon-of-Avalon's Mission 2: Hauntings of the Past (Part 2)...yeah, I know we're doing this early, but it's important for Amy and Ryoshi's upcoming wedding, so bear with us. (This will be submitted to the group when the actual Part 2 of Mission 2 is released.)

So...um...yeah. Spoilers. Lots and lots of spoilers. ^^; How do I know? I may have been part of the Mission 2 planning committee... But really, though. All of this was crucial that we get past before Amy and Ryoshi's wedding, and besides, it's all amazing stuff. Though poor Amy doesn't seem to like it when Ryoshi gets upset, especially at stuff like this! Unfortunately for her, comforting Ryoshi is among the LEAST of her worries compared to imminent death in two days...

Oh, and it's actually likely that Dullahan doesn't actually know about the whole "you will die in two days if you don't put the Celestial Stone back on that day", nor would he know that this whole "shadows attacking you" was actually the Gengar king's test to see if they were worthy to even do so in the first place. I wasn't exactly told this information until recently, but eh, we have a wedding we need to get to, and besides, this actually makes the story stronger. And in the end, matching with canon 100% is less important than telling a good story that fits your characters, and even the admins can agree with that!

Wooooo~. Behold, the ancient power that is the FAIRY TYPE! Oh how well destiny works sometimes. Who could have guessed 8 months ago when Amy and I began to plan the romance out that both Amy and Ryoshi would share something like this?

Unfortunately, Ryoshi isn't as happy about the type as I am. 'Fairy' isn't a very manly name, and we all know how our Mawile friend hates being called femmine. But between death of himself, Amy, and her whole tribe or a girly type... Welp, can't argue against it.

Prose by both of us!

Why does it look like Jukidoor has some of his head missing?
