Gray Voice's Tangled Mistake

Description

This is my second and final entry for :iconmetroid-club:'s "Chozo and Luminoth" contest. It's such a cool subject that I just had to submit two entries instead of one!

The idea for this short comic has been in my head in for a long time now. We all know that Samus was raised by the Chozo, or more specifically, Old Bird and Gray Voice. We all know she grew up on the Planet Zebes. But we don't know (and usually don't need to know) the full details. Though the recent official Metroid manga satisfied my curiosity for a while, I couldn't help but think..."What if there was one part of human biology they didn't know anything about (specifically, hair)?"
I mean, they're bird men. They don't have hair; they have feathers and some sort of unknown skin texture.

If you're wondering why 3-year-old Samus, Gray Voice, Old Bird, and 27-year-old Samus are bordering the comic, I figured it would make a nice "before and after" look, especially since 27-year-old Samus is the most recognizable. (I know her actual age is debatable at best, but according to the Metroid timeline on Wikitroid, she would be about 26 after the events of Metroid Fusion, so that actually isn't far off.) There's no reason why she's wearing the Power Suit from Metroid Zero Mission except that it looked the coolest (and easiest to render) for me. She's also charging up an Ice Beam, and you can see that her hair is back to where it used to be when she was almost 11.
It was hard for me to decide whether Old Bird or Gray Voice should be the star here, but I figured I already used Old Bird in "Chozo Fashion", Gray Voice is taller and therefore looks more like an authority figure, and besides, it's implied that both of them are befuddled about this stuff.

5-year-old Samus doesn't seem to look that different from her 3-year-old self, but you can tell her original outfit from K-2L is starting to shrink...
And by the way, "Hohoho" just sounds like the kind of laugh old people would make. It has nothing to do with Santa Claus here. :)

8-year-old Samus' vine-swinging pose was the easiest to draw, and the most fun. I was really tempted to make her shout, "AAOOAAOOAAAAAOOOAAOOH!" like Tarzan, but two of my original characters already do that, so I went for something more general. Since those little Etecoons are natives of Zebes, it wouldn't be out of place to throw them in too. It's also worth noting that she looks like how I'd normally draw 10-year-olds. I figured that since her final height is 6'3", she can afford to be a little tall for an 8-year-old (4'3").
You'll also notice that she's wearing the Zero Suit now. I thought it would be really cool to show how stretchy and adaptable that suit can be.

11-year-old Samus looks like one of my original characters at age 12. (Not that different, but hey, it works.) You might have noticed that her eye shape is changing wildly--it's nothing big. It's just that I like drawing different eyes for characters of different ages.
See the only panel that Old Bird appears in? (Well, at least you can see the back of his head.) Though I don't know what they ate at the dinner table, I made it so that...well, check the food pyramid. The starch, protein, and vegetables in those trays are in perfectly balanced amounts! You know, more people would eat healthier if they knew it would make them as strong as Samus.

14-year-old Samus looks much older, but that's probably because she's wearing that awesome red tie in her hair. It's unknown where she got it in the first place, but here, we can pretend that Gray Voice gave it to her. This pose of her tripping over her own hair was by far the hardest to draw, not only because teenage characters are difficult (for me), but the very awkwardness of tripping isn't very easy to convey.

And finally, we have Hairdresser Man (real name to be determined). Those of you who've played Metroid: Other M will recognize everything about this scene. (I intentionally cartoonified Samus' facial expression to convey her frustration.) Now we know why she acted all bratty back then. :)

From pencil sketch to finished piece, it took me one week. (January 4 to January 11) I'm glad I finished it in time for 1/11/11! I don't know if I'll have enough free time to paint in this much detail at this speed for the rest of the college year, though. Enjoy!

Let me preface this by saying I am a self-proclaimed Metroid and Samus fangirl, and this comic was EYE CANDY for me as a fan.

WOW. I first saw this as a fave on one of my watcher's pages, and thought "Wow, this is interesting. You don't normally see pictures and comics about Samus as a child." So I clicked on it, followed the link, and was INSTANTLY floored by your style and color choices. The entire comic itself is very vibrant and beautiful. The story is very original and I've never seen anything like it before. Samus' hair was always something I'd been wondering about, being an avid Metroid fan myself. How did she manage to keep it so beautiful after all of those years with the Chozo? I CRACKED up at the "It might be adverse to your health" line. CRACKED UP. That just totally made me laugh. I thought the borders of Young Samus and Grey Voice and present Samus were an amazing contrast, and really made me laugh at her evolved personality.

I personally love this little comic, and think it deserves front-page status because of its incredible originality and amazing artistic quality. I can definitely say that this was an instant fave and made me watch you. This is my first critique, but I feel as if this piece deserves it, and I give this comic the "Obsessed Fangirl Seal of Approval". XD

NICE JOB. Keep up the good work.
